Indian mythology · deity · wealth, fortune, prosperity
Goddess of fortune and abundance who emerged from the churning of the cosmic ocean and chose Vishnu as her consort. She incarnates alongside his avatars, as Sita with Rama, as Rukmini with Krishna.
Gods and demons churn the cosmic ocean with Mount Mandara as the rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Treasures emerge, Lakshmi among them, along with a poison so deadly that Shiva must swallow it, turning his throat blue.
