Angada
Indian · vanara · young valor, diplomacy
Son of the slain Vali, made crown prince of the vanaras. He led the southern search party and delivered Rama's final ultimatum in Ravana's own court, planting his foot so firmly no demon could move it.
Sugriva
Indian · vanara · alliance, restored kingship
The exiled vanara king whom Rama restored to the throne of Kishkindha by slaying his brother Vali, in exchange for the armies of monkeys and bears that found Sita and stormed Lanka.
Tara
Indian · vanara · counsel, grief
Queen of the vanaras, wife of Vali and then of Sugriva, celebrated for her political wisdom. Her lament over the dying Vali, and her cool defusing of Lakshmana's wrath, are set pieces of the epic.
Vali
Indian · vanara · might, contested justice
Sugriva's mighty elder brother, who took half the strength of any foe who faced him. Rama shot him from concealment, an act the dying Vali protests, and the text itself debates, in one of the epic's sharpest moral passages.
